French Oak Flooring Oak Tourbe
Tourbe is peat, and this is the deepest colour in the French oak range: a smoked brown-black with the damp, earthy weight of turf rather than the flatness of a black stain. At 7 1/4″ the board is wide enough to show the figure of the oak through the dark, which is the whole difference between a smoked floor and a painted one.
Light Rustic grade keeps knots and shade movement in. On the darkest colours this is what preserves the material: look along a board and the grain lifts out of the colour as the light crosses it.
It is finished in oil rather than lacquer — the finish bonds into the top fibres instead of forming a film, leaving a deep matte surface that can be refreshed and touched up locally. On a very dark floor an oil also reads richer than a lacquer, because there is no film between the eye and the wood. A 9/16″ engineered core carries a 4 mm wear layer.
Oak Tourbe is specified for libraries, panelled dining rooms, screening rooms and hospitality interiors where the floor is meant to be the deepest plane in the room and everything else lifts off it.
