Hardness Ratings and What They Fail to Tell You
Durability in flooring is usually reduced to a single number, and that number explains less than it appears to. The Janka test measures the force required to embed a steel ball halfway into a timber sample. It is a genuine measure of resistance to denting from a concentrated impact — a dropped pan, a heeled shoe, a chair leg. It is not a measure of resistance to scratching, to wear from foot traffic, to moisture movement, or to the appearance of age, which is what most people actually mean by durability. This is why very hard species can disappoint.
A dense timber resists denting well but can still scratch visibly, and a hard board under a thin, brittle finish will show wear faster than a softer board under a resilient one. The finish, not the timber, is the surface being walked on. Hardness also carries costs. Denser species are harder to machine and to sand, and some are prone to more dramatic seasonal movement, which in a humidity-cycled climate matters more than resistance to a dropped object.
