Double Herringbone Flooring: Borders, Framing and Block Count

Double herringbone flooring is the same pattern at a different weight. Instead of setting one block against one block, the field groups them in pairs, so two blocks run together before the direction turns. The geometry is unchanged and the effect is completely different, because the rhythm of the floor slows down and broadens.

That single change is often the answer to a room where standard herringbone looks restless. In a wide contemporary space a fine pattern can read as general busyness from across the room, while double herringbone flooring holds its geometry at distance and gives a large floor a calm order. This guide covers when to specify it, how borders frame it, and what the block count does to the setting out.

Single, Double and Triple

The naming is literal. Single herringbone alternates one block at a time. Double herringbone flooring pairs them. Triple groups three, and beyond that the pattern begins to lose the interlock that makes it read as herringbone at all and starts to look like blocks laid in steps.

Each step up in count enlarges the visual module without changing the block itself, which is useful because it lets a room be scaled up while keeping the same material, grade and cost of block. A long room that would need an unusually long block to look right in single herringbone will often look better in double herringbone flooring using a standard block, and the standard block is easier to source and to replace.

There is also a practical reason to prefer a grouped module over an oversized block. A very long single block is heavier to handle, harder to keep flat and slower to lay, whereas double herringbone flooring achieves a similar visual scale from blocks a fitter can set accurately all day.

The block itself does not change when the count does, and that is the practical appeal. A standard block held in stock can produce a single, double or triple field, so the visual scale of a room can be adjusted late in a project without re-ordering material or waiting for a bespoke cut. Double herringbone flooring is therefore often the answer when a room turns out larger on site than it read on the drawing.

Where it stops working is at the far end. A quadruple grouping loses the interlock that gives the pattern its name, because too many blocks run together before the direction turns and the eye reads parallel bands rather than a woven field. Triple is generally the practical limit, and even that wants a large room to sit in.

There is a labour consideration as well. Grouped patterns are quicker to lay than single herringbone for the same floor area, since the fitter is placing more material per direction change.

Room shape influences the count as much as room size. A long, narrow gallery reads better in double herringbone flooring than in triple, because a very wide module in a narrow plan leaves too few repeats across the width for the pattern to register as a field.

Square rooms are the most forgiving. With no dominant direction, a grouped module reads evenly from every approach and the border can be kept a consistent width on all four sides.

Grouping also changes how grade reads across a field. Because two or three blocks sit together before the direction turns, any strong figure or colour variation in the timber is presented in a wider band rather than broken up every block, so a character grade in double herringbone flooring reads considerably busier than the same grade in a single field. Where a character grade is wanted with a grouped module, it is worth asking for a more evenly sorted parcel.

A select grade behaves the opposite way and can look slightly flat in a grouped pattern, since the geometry is doing all the work and the timber is contributing very little. A mid grade is often the best partner for a grouped field.

Borders and Framing

A pattern this bold needs a stop. Without a border the field runs into the wall and finishes on whatever part block the geometry happens to produce, which is the detail that makes an otherwise fine floor look unresolved. A border, whether a plain double plank frame or a wider banded surround, closes the field on a straight line and gives the pattern an edge to be measured against.

With double herringbone flooring the border usually needs to be a little wider than it would be for single, because a broader internal rhythm makes a thin frame look mean. Where the floor meets stone or an adjoining material the border also carries the movement allowance, so the junction is designed rather than filled.

Doorways deserve the same treatment. Carrying the border through each opening lets double herringbone flooring stop cleanly at every threshold, so the pattern in a hall and the pattern in the room beyond do not have to align with one another.

A banded border also gives a room a way to deal with an awkward plan. Where a wall is out of square or a chimney breast interrupts one side, the border can be widened quietly on that run so the double herringbone flooring field inside it stays true, and the irregularity is absorbed at the edge where nobody reads it.

Border proportion follows the field. A single herringbone in a modest block is happy inside a two-plank border, whereas double herringbone flooring generally wants three planks or a banded surround with a contrasting inner line, because a broad internal rhythm makes a narrow frame look like an afterthought. The relationship is proportional rather than fixed, and it is drawn rather than chosen from a list.

Framing also solves the awkward room. Where one wall runs out of square, or a chimney breast interrupts a side, the border can be widened quietly on that run so the field inside stays true and the irregularity is absorbed at the edge where nobody reads it. This is the oldest trick in parquetry and it still works.

Where two rooms of different size share a material, keeping the border width constant and letting the field size vary reads better than the reverse.

Contrasting borders are a decision to take carefully. A darker frame around double herringbone flooring emphasises the geometry and suits a formal room, while a border in the same tone as the field lets the pattern read quietly and suits a contemporary interior. Both are correct; they are simply saying different things.

Inner lines are the refinement worth knowing about. A narrow strip of the same species set just inside a wider border gives double herringbone flooring a drawn edge that reads as deliberate rather than as a simple frame, and it costs very little because the quantity involved is small.

Corner treatment then follows. A mitred border corner is the quiet, expected detail; a squared corner with a corner block is more emphatic and belongs in a formal room where the floor is meant to be noticed.

Doorways are carried through on the border rather than the field. Where double herringbone flooring runs from a hall into a reception room, a border across the threshold lets each room hold its own setting out, and the two fields no longer have to align with one another through the opening. This is the detail that separates a drawn floor from an improvised one.

Where a room has a bay or a recess, the border follows the recess so the field stays rectangular. Attempting to carry a grouped module into a bay produces a series of part modules that read as an error.

Block Count and Setting Out

Grouping blocks changes the arithmetic of the room. Because the repeating module is now two blocks wide rather than one, the field advances in larger steps, and the centre line has to be struck so that those larger steps land symmetrically at both borders. Getting this wrong is more visible than in single herringbone, since an error is carried in units twice the size.

The practical consequence is that double herringbone flooring is drawn before it is ordered. The module is set against the room dimensions, the border width is chosen to absorb the remainder, and the quantity is calculated from the drawing. Wastage is slightly higher than for single herringbone, because the larger module produces larger offcuts at the perimeter, and the order allowance is calculated from the drawn layout rather than from a flat percentage.

Setting out a grouped field is arithmetic done before ordering rather than after delivery. The repeating module is measured, the number of whole modules that will cross the room in each direction is counted, and the remainder is given to the border. Double herringbone flooring advances in steps twice the size of a single field, so an error in the centre line is carried in double units and is correspondingly more visible.

The dry run therefore matters more here than anywhere. Two full modules laid loose along the centre line will show immediately whether the remainder is going to be equal on both sides, and adjusting the border by a few millimetres at that stage costs nothing.

Wastage runs slightly higher than for single herringbone because the larger module produces larger offcuts at the perimeter. The allowance is calculated from the drawn layout rather than from a flat percentage of floor area.

Where double herringbone flooring runs through several connected rooms, the module is kept constant and the border does the work of stopping each room, so the pattern reads as one continuous decision rather than as a series of separate floors.

Quantities are ordered against the drawn layout with an attic stock allowance on top. Matching into an established double herringbone flooring field years later is difficult, and a small reserve of the same batch removes that problem entirely for the life of the floor.

Delivery and handling deserve a note. A grouped field is laid faster than a single herringbone for the same area, so double herringbone flooring can arrive on site in fewer, larger deliveries, but the blocks still need acclimatising in the room they will be laid in rather than stacked in a corridor.

Where It Belongs

Double herringbone flooring suits large formal rooms, long galleries and open plans, and it suits high ceilings. It is less convincing in a small room, where the module can swallow the floor and leave too little field inside the border to read as a pattern at all.

The heritage precedent is worth knowing. Grouped and framed parquet fields were standard in the formal rooms of the French chateaux, and the Palace of Versailles gave its name to the panel that framed them. Contemporary architecture uses the same devices, as the current herringbone interiors show.
