Chevron Parquet Panels: Borders, Framing and Scale

Chevron parquet panels take an angled field and give it an edge. A continuous chevron floor runs from wall to wall and lets the pattern meet whatever it finds; a panelled floor divides the room into framed areas, each with its own spine, separated by plain bands of timber.

The difference is architectural rather than decorative. A continuous field makes a room read as one volume, while chevron parquet panels establish a hierarchy — a centre, a perimeter, a route around the edge — and that hierarchy is either the making of a room or an imposition on it.

Which of the two is right is settled on the plan, long before any material is chosen. What follows is the drawing logic rather than a style guide, because panels are a plan decision and the plan is where they are either right or wrong.

Chevron Parquet Panels and the Framed Floor

The framed floor is the older idea. Historic parquet was made in panels because it was the practical way to build a pattern floor off site and carry it in, and the frame that held each panel became a design element in its own right. Chevron parquet panels use the same logic with modern construction: an angled field is set within a plain border, and the border does the work of squaring the opening, absorbing the perimeter margin and giving the pattern a clean line to stop against.

Practically, this solves the problem every angled floor has at its edges. A chevron field that runs into a wall leaves a row of cut points, and a row of cut points is the detail the eye finds first in an otherwise disciplined room. A border removes the issue entirely by ending the pattern on a straight line, and it does so without the compromise of adjusting the spine to suit the walls.

The frame also allows a room to be read at two scales at once — the fine rhythm of the pattern inside, and the calm plain surface around it — which is why panelled floors sit comfortably in rooms with elaborate cornice, panelling or stone.

There is a construction distinction worth making. Historic panels were assembled off site into square modules and laid as units, which is why old parquet lifts in squares. Modern chevron parquet panels are laid board by board within a drawn frame, so the floor is continuous underneath even though it reads as panels.

That matters for stability. A continuous bonded field with a drawn border behaves as one floor, while a genuinely modular panel system introduces a joint at every panel edge, and joints are where an angled floor moves first.

It also matters for repair. A bonded field can be cut out and patched locally, while a modular floor usually has to be lifted panel by panel to reach the damage.

Inlay is where the framed floor becomes joinery. A fillet of walnut, wenge or bronze set between two plain bands turns a border into a drawn line, and on chevron parquet panels that line does the same job a picture rail does on a wall: it establishes where the composition stops.

Inlays are milled into the border boards rather than surface-applied, so they survive sanding and they cannot lift. A brass or bronze fillet needs a slightly different expansion allowance from timber and that is detailed rather than assumed.

Historically the frame carried far more than a fillet. Versailles and Chantilly floors used the panel edge to hold complex banding, and the modern versions of those ideas sit comfortably alongside chevron parquet panels in a room that can carry them.

Borders, Bands and the Perimeter

A border is drawn as a width, not chosen as a product. The width is normally set against the reveals of the doors and windows so that the plain band lines through with the architecture rather than floating at an arbitrary dimension, and it is held constant on all four sides even where the room is not square. Where the room is significantly out of true, the imbalance is taken up in a second, wider outer band rather than by varying the inner border, which keeps the frame reading as a frame.

Bands can be single or double. A single plain band is quiet and modern and suits an interior with little other ornament. A double band with a contrasting inner line — a darker oak, a walnut fillet, occasionally a metal inlay — is the classical detail, and it belongs where the rest of the room can carry it. In both cases the band runs with the wall, so its grain direction is at odds with the field inside, which is precisely what makes the frame legible.

Thresholds are drawn as part of the same system. A doorway is squared with the band, and a change of level, a sliding track or a stone junction is met by the plain timber rather than by the pattern. This is the detail that most often separates a floor that was designed from one that was simply laid.

Grain direction in the border is the detail that most often goes unspecified. A border whose boards run parallel to the wall gives the frame a continuous line and makes the corner a mitre; a border whose boards run perpendicular reads as a comb and fights the field inside.

We draw the border as a parallel run with mitred corners unless there is a specific reason to do otherwise, and the corner detail is shown on the setting-out drawing rather than left to the fitter.

Where chevron parquet panels meet stone or metal, the border is the meeting element rather than the pattern, so the movement joint and the transition profile both sit in plain timber where they can be detailed cleanly.

Rooms that already contain a strong ceiling geometry are the natural home for a framed floor. Where a plaster ceiling has a centre rose or a coffered grid, the panel below is drawn to relate to it, and the two read as one composition rather than as two unrelated decisions.

Where the ceiling is plain, the frame takes its geometry from the walls and openings instead, and the safest rule is to line the border with the reveals rather than centring the panel in the room. A panel centred in a room whose door is off-centre will look wrong in a way that is hard to diagnose.

One further note on scale. Chevron parquet panels in a room with a very high ceiling can take a wider border than the reveals alone would suggest, because the floor is seen from further away and a narrow band disappears.

Panel Scale, Room Size and Repeat

Scale is where chevron parquet panels succeed or fail. A panel that is too small for its room turns the floor into a tiled surface and loses the sweep the pattern is supposed to give. A panel that is too large leaves the border reading as a thin margin rather than a frame, and the room gains nothing from the division.

The rule we work to is that the framed field should hold at least four full repeats of the pattern along its shorter dimension, so the geometry is unmistakably a chevron rather than a fragment of one. With our five and a half inch boards, that sets a practical minimum for the panel, and it is why very small rooms are usually better served by a continuous field with a simple border than by a panelled floor.

Where a plan contains several rooms of different sizes, panels are sized room by room and the border width is held constant across all of them. That gives the floor a common language from space to space without forcing an identical layout into rooms that cannot take it. The angle itself is also held constant throughout, since a change of angle between adjoining rooms is visible at the threshold and undermines the whole idea of a framed system.

Repeat count is the number to hold on to. Four full repeats across the shorter dimension of the framed field is our working minimum, six is comfortable, and anything below three reads as a fragment no matter how well the border is drawn.

That single rule decides most questions about whether chevron parquet panels suit a particular room. It is quicker than any amount of discussion and it can be checked from a plan in under a minute.

Where a room is too small for a framed field, the alternatives are a continuous field with a narrow border, or a plain plank floor with the pattern reserved for an adjoining space. Both are better answers than a panel that cannot complete itself.

Multiple panels in one room are possible and usually a mistake below a certain size. Two framed fields in a large reception room can work where the room has two clear zones; three or more begin to read as tiling, and chevron parquet panels lose the quality that made them worth doing.

Where a room genuinely needs subdivision, a single frame with an internal band is quieter than two separate panels, and it keeps the floor continuous underneath.

The angle inside the frame follows the same logic as anywhere else, and it is worth reading alongside chevron flooring angles before the panel size is fixed, since the repeat count depends on both.

Where Chevron Parquet Panels Belong

Chevron parquet panels suit rooms with a defined centre — a formal dining room, a library, an entrance hall, a principal reception room in a townhouse or a landmark apartment. They also suit interiors where the floor has to acknowledge existing architecture rather than override it, which is why they appear so often in pre-war buildings and in restored houses.

They are less convincing in open plans without walls, where a frame implies a boundary the architecture does not have, and in rooms whose main quality is a long uninterrupted view. Those spaces are better served by a continuous field, which is set out on our chevron flooring page.

Every panelled floor is drawn before it is priced, because the border width, the panel size and the perimeter allowance all affect quantity. Budget behaves differently on a framed floor. Chevron parquet panels use more labour at the perimeter and generate more cutting than a continuous field, but they also use plain board for the border, which is cheaper per square foot than mitred stock. The two effects partly cancel, and the net difference is small enough that it should not decide the design.

What does move the number is complexity. A single frame in a rectangular room is straightforward; a floor with panels in five rooms, three border widths and two inlay details is a joinery exercise, and it is priced as one.

Where those conditions hold, chevron parquet panels give a floor the discipline of joinery. Where they do not, a continuous field with a simple border is the better and quieter answer.

Three sentences worth remembering. Chevron parquet panels are drawn from the reveals, not from the room. Chevron parquet panels need four full repeats inside the frame. And chevron parquet panels belong in rooms that already have a centre.

Maintenance on chevron parquet panels is no different from a continuous field, with one exception: the border takes the traffic. A perimeter band around a dining table or along a route to a door wears before the pattern does, so the finish is chosen for the border condition rather than the field condition.

Where a maintenance coat is applied later, it goes over the whole floor rather than the worn band alone, because a refreshed border against an aged field is more visible than the wear was.

Drawing and approval run in a fixed order. The plan is marked with the reveals and the door swings, the border width is set against them, the panel is sized to the repeat, and only then is the material quantity calculated. Approval is given on a drawing rather than on a sample, because the sample tells you about the timber and the drawing tells you about the room. We issue a setting-out at scale showing the frame, the panel, the repeat and every threshold, and it is signed before milling is released.

Where a scheme covers several residences, the same drawing is adapted room by room while the border width stays fixed, so chevron parquet panels read as one system across the whole project rather than as a series of separate floors.

Site sequence follows the drawing. The border is set out first and laid last, the field is bonded from the spine outward inside the frame line, and the perimeter is cut to the floor that exists rather than to the floor that was drawn. It is slower than a continuous field by about a day per room and it is the reason a framed floor looks like joinery rather than flooring.
