Chevron flooring installation is decided on the first morning, not the last. A plank floor absorbs a room that is out of square because the joints run one way and small drift disappears into the length.

A chevron floor cannot, because every board is cut to an angle and meets its partner at a point, and a point that is even slightly out is visible from standing height. The whole field is governed by one drawn line, and if that line is wrong the error grows with every row rather than cancelling out.

Everything below is what we ask for on site before a single board is bonded, and most of it happens with a chalk line and a level rather than with adhesive. A chevron flooring installation is also a sequencing problem. The floor is one of the last wet-free trades to go in and one of the first to be damaged by everything that follows, so its position in the programme is agreed early rather than negotiated late.

Chevron Flooring Installation Begins With the Subfloor

Flatness tolerance for a chevron flooring installation is tighter than for plank, and tighter again than for a square-cut pattern. The reason is geometric rather than fussy: the mitred tip of a board is its thinnest and least supported point, and a hollow under a tip that would be invisible beneath a plank will let the point lift and telegraph across the field. We work to a flatness of three millimetres under a two metre straightedge, and where underfloor heating is present we ask for the screed to be commissioned and the heating cycled before anything is delivered.

Moisture is measured, not estimated. A concrete slab is tested at depth rather than at the surface, timber substrates are checked at several points across the room, and both are recorded on the day. On a bonded chevron field the adhesive is doing structural work, so a substrate that is dusty, laitance-covered or contaminated with old adhesive is prepared back to a sound surface first. None of this is specific to the pattern in principle, but a chevron floor punishes shortcuts here far faster than plank does.

Subfloor preparation is quoted separately for a reason. Levelling compound, primer and, where required, a decoupling or acoustic layer are all part of the assembly the floor sits on, and pricing them inside a square-foot rate hides the one variable most likely to change once the slab is exposed.

We survey before we quote wherever the programme allows it. A chevron flooring installation over a substrate that has been measured, recorded and photographed carries almost none of the risk that the same job carries over a substrate taken on trust.

Timber substrates need their own attention. Deflection between joists that a plank floor would bridge will show at the points of an angled field, so we look at joist centres and board thickness as well as flatness, and specify an overlay where the structure is marginal.

Every chevron flooring installation we quote carries a substrate report, and where the report shows a problem we price the remedy rather than absorbing it into the rate. It is the least popular paragraph in any quotation and the one that saves the most money.

Drawing the Spine Before the First Board

The spine is drawn against the architecture, not against a wall. In a rectangular room it will often sit on the centre line, but in a real plan it is more usually taken from the sightline that matters — the centre of a doorway run, the axis of a window bay, or the view from an entry hall straight through to the far end of the space. We mark it, stand in the doorway, and look down it before anything else happens, because that is the view every visitor will have for the life of the floor.

Once the spine is set, the first two boards are dry laid and the point checked with a square. From there the field grows outward in both directions, and the discrepancy between the drawn line and the real walls is pushed into the perimeter, where it becomes a margin. This is why a chevron flooring installation needs its perimeter detail agreed in advance: the plan almost never gives an equal margin on both sides, and the decision about where the imbalance goes is an aesthetic one that belongs to the designer rather than the fitter.

Where the floor runs through more than one room, the spine is continuous. Stopping and restarting at a threshold produces two floors that never quite agree, and the join is the first thing the eye finds.

The setting-out drawing is the deliverable that matters most. It records the spine, the border widths, the perimeter allowance and the position of every threshold, and it is issued before delivery so that the designer approves the geometry rather than discovering it.

On site the drawing is transferred with a laser and a chalk line, and it is checked from the doorway by eye before any adhesive is opened. A chevron flooring installation that has been checked from standing height at this stage rarely needs anything checked again.

Where a plan is genuinely irregular — a bay, a splayed wall, a curved threshold — the field is stopped at a drawn border and the irregular area is taken in plain plank. Forcing a pattern into a shape it cannot hold is the most common cause of a floor that looks wrong without anyone being able to say why.

A chevron flooring installation in an occupied building carries one extra constraint: the spine has to be set without the room being empty. We take the line from the architecture, mark it permanently, and work in sections rather than compromising the geometry to suit the furniture.

Handing, Bonding and the Order of Work

Chevron boards are handed. Left and right pieces are mirror images and are not interchangeable, so they are ordered as balanced pairs and opened as pairs on site. Mixing packs from different production runs is the classic way to end up short of one hand at the far side of a room, and the remedy at that stage is a re-mill rather than a substitution.

Full adhesive bonding is the normal method. A floating chevron floor moves as one raft, and a raft made of hundreds of mitred points will open at the points before it opens anywhere else. Bonding also gives the acoustic build-up something to work against, which matters where a board approval or an acoustic rating is in play. The adhesive is spread in manageable areas so that boards are placed into a live bed rather than onto a skinned one, and the points are checked continuously rather than at the end of a run.

Sequence is the last piece. Boards are worked from the spine outward, alternating hands, with the field held true by string lines rather than by eye. Cutting to the perimeter happens after the field is complete, so the margin is cut to the floor that exists rather than to the floor that was drawn.

Deliveries are booked to the programme, not in advance of it. Boards that sit wrapped in a corridor for three weeks in an unconditioned building are already moving before they are opened, and no chevron flooring installation recovers from a bad acclimatisation.

Packs are opened and inspected on arrival. Hands are counted, grade is checked against the approved sample, and any board that has travelled badly is set aside rather than worked into the field and remembered later.

Adhesive choice follows the substrate and the acoustic requirement rather than habit. A rigid adhesive gives the flattest field and the crispest points, an elastic adhesive absorbs more substrate movement, and the decision is recorded with the rest of the assembly rather than taken on the day.

Handing is checked twice on every chevron flooring installation, once at delivery and once at the start of each room, because a shortage of one hand discovered halfway across a field cannot be solved on site.

Offcuts are retained rather than discarded until the perimeter is complete. On an angled floor the cut from one end of a board is frequently the exact piece needed at the opposite margin, and a chevron flooring installation that keeps its offcuts uses materially less timber than one that does not.

Borders, Thresholds and Protection

Borders do more than finish an edge. A plain plank border squares an opening, absorbs the perimeter margin and gives thresholds, sliding tracks and changes of level a clean line to stop against. On a chevron field this is close to essential, because a run of cut points along a door track is the detail everyone notices and nobody can fix afterwards. The border width is drawn, not left to the site, and it is normally set against the door and window reveals rather than against the room.

Movement provision follows the same logic. The field needs a perimeter allowance to breathe, expansion is provided at wide glazed openings, and where underfloor heating runs the surface temperature is capped and the humidity band held through the seasons. Protection after laying is the unglamorous last step: a bonded floor is covered with a breathable protection rather than sheet plastic, and other trades are kept off the field until the adhesive has fully cured.

Sanding and finishing on site, where a floor is supplied raw, is the last place a chevron flooring installation can be lost. An angled field has to be sanded in more than one direction, and a machine run only along the spine will leave the opposing faces of every point marked. Where a site finish is required — usually to match existing joinery — the sequence is drum, then orbital, then hand work at the perimeter, with the final pass taken at forty-five degrees to the spine so no direction is favoured. It is slower and it is the only method that leaves the points clean.

Handover includes the maintenance regime as well as the floor. Humidity range, cleaning products and the interval for a maintenance coat are written down, because a floor that is looked after on the wrong schedule fails at the points first.

Snagging is done at low light rather than under working lights. A raking lamp along the spine shows any point that stands proud, and those are the only defects worth chasing on a chevron flooring installation; anything invisible at that angle will be invisible for the life of the floor.
