How Engineered Construction Uses Less Slow-Grown Oak

Much of the best oak comes from smallholdings in France, Germany and Croatia where PEFC is the practical route to certification. A supplier who offers only FSC may be sourcing from larger industrial forest; a supplier who offers neither is asking to be taken on trust. What you want in either case is a chain-of-custody number you can verify, not a logo on a brochure.

Indoor Air Quality Is Part of the Same Question

Sustainability is usually discussed as forestry and stops there, but the finish on the floor affects the air in the room for months after installation. Adhesives and lacquers release volatile organic compounds as they cure, and in a sealed, air-conditioned interior that has nowhere to go. Hardwax oils and low-VOC water-based lacquers cure with a fraction of the emissions of traditional solvent finishes. Oiled floors can also be repaired in place rather than sanded whole.
